Meet Dr Nelwamondo
Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo is one of Africa’s most influential voices at the intersection of data, AI, innovation policy, and national-scale impact. As former Chief Executive Officer of South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF), he leads the country’s premier science and research funding agency, shaping how South Africa and the continent invest in the capabilities that will define the next decade: data infrastructure, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.
A computational intelligence PhD (Wits) graduate, an Electrical engineer by profession, and former Harvard Fellow, Dr Nelwamondo has spent his career turning frontier research into real-world outcomes, driving strategy, execution, and innovation at scale. Before the NRF, he served as an Executive Manager at the CSIR, where he helped lead high-impact R&D portfolios across AI, data science, and communication technologies, delivering measurable returns and societal value. He has supervised more than 25 PhD and Masters students in these fields, and has published widely in various journals, book chapters and conference proceedings.
In recognition of his contributions to science and engineering, he was awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in Silver, one of South Africa’s highest national honours, awarded by the president of the republic.
Beyond executive leadership, Dr Nelwamondo plays a strategic role in shaping research and innovation ecosystems locally and globally. He served across key governance and advisory platforms including the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), National Advisory Council on Innovation, the Council on Higher Education (CHE), the Belmont Forum, and the Global Research Council, amongst others, helping steer collaboration, funding models, and the future direction of research and innovation.former
